Sustainable Initiative
The United Nations introduced the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 as a global blueprint for creating a better, more sustainable world by 2030. Labuan Geopark integrates these goals into its geopark management strategies, community initiatives, and conservation programs.
Labuan Geopark’s progress on SDGs
Labuan Geopark actively contributes to 13 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with particular focus on priorities aligned with the unique island characteristics, ecological diversity, geological heritage and socio-economic landscape of the Federal Territory of Labuan.
SDG 17 · Partnerships for the Goals
Labuan Geopark shows encouraging progress in implementing SDG 17 through strengthened governance, multi-agency collaboration and strategic networks at local, national and regional levels.
The Geopark Field Assessment Programme in November 2021 and the establishment of a Working Committee brought close cooperation between government agencies, local authorities, technical institutions and the local community, proving Labuan Geopark’s capacity to manage the geopark inclusively and in an integrated manner.
Community involvement by youth, students and community leaders is the heart of geopark development. Collaboration with agencies such as MOTAC, Labuan Museum and NGOs strengthens awareness of the geopark’s importance while building capacity through courses, technical visits and community activities.
Ongoing collaboration is carried out through the Malaysia Geopark Network (MGN), engagement sessions with tourism agencies, knowledge exchange with other geoparks such as Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark, and programmes organised by other agencies. This network supports capacity building, geopark management standards and the long-term sustainability of Labuan Geopark.
