This traditional water village is one of Labuan’s oldest fishing settlements, with wooden houses on stilts connected by wooden walkways. The community preserves maritime traditions and ancestral customs.
Bebuloh Laut is one of the oldest traditional water villages in Labuan, home to a Brunei-Malay community that has preserved its fishing heritage and maritime traditions for generations. The name “Bebuloh Laut” comes from the bamboo (“bebuloh”) that once grew abundantly in the area and its location by the sea (“laut”), distinguishing it from the inland settlement of Bebuloh Darat.
The village features traditional wooden houses built on stilts above the water, linked by a network of timber walkways that form the main thoroughfares of daily life. Its people continue to rely on the sea, engaging in activities such as fishing, anchovy processing and small-scale traditional enterprises.
Bebuloh Laut is also rich in Brunei-Malay cultural heritage. Its language, customs and close-knit community reflect an identity that functions much like a large extended family. Visitors can admire the traditional stilt-house architecture, experience the authentic atmosphere of a fishing village, purchase fresh seafood products and gain insight into how this community preserves its traditions while adapting to modern times.
