This geosite lies atop a marine abrasion platform encircling the island. It is the only geosite in Labuan characterised by limestone formed from ancient coral reefs.
The landscape of this geosite sits on a marine erosion platform surrounding the island. Pulau Burong is the only geosite in Labuan characterised by limestone formed from coral reefs. It features an extensive reef flat with a relatively limited land area. According to earlier studies (e.g. Wilson, 1964), the island once exhibited limestone landforms such as pinnacles and caves.
Pulau Burong is also reported to be rich in archaeological heritage, including human remains and porcelain artefacts dating from around 900-1500 A.D. of the Tang, Song, and Ming Dynasties (Wilson, 1964). In the past, limestone from the island was quarried for the construction of the Labuan Airport.
