SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The United Nations introduced the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 as a global blueprint for creating a better, more sustainable world by 2030. Labuan Geopark integrates these goals into its geopark management strategies, community initiatives, and conservation programs.
LABUAN GEOPARK PROGRESS ON SDGs
Labuan Geopark actively contributes to 13 out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with focused progress in areas that reflect its unique island setting, ecological assets, and socio-economic landscape.
Five (5) priority SDGs — SDG 4, 6, 8, 11, and 14 — have been identified as priority areas for strategic action and targeted intervention.
- Good Progress: One (1) of the 17 SDGs (SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals) has demonstrated consistent and positive development.
- Ongoing monitoring: Seven (7) other SDGs (SDG 1, 3, 5, 10, 12, 13, and 15) require continuous monitoring and concerted effort to maintain progress.
Priority Focus Areas
Labuan Geopark has identified five critical SDGs that demand heightened attention and strategic action.
SDG 4
Advancing geoheritage awareness through Sekolah Angkat programs, Sahabat Labuan Geopark community initiatives, public exhibitions, and dedicated geological education activities at the Chimney Museum, fostering environmental literacy and appreciation for earth sciences.
SDG 6
Implementing river rejuvenation projects, wetland conservation initiatives at Kinabenua, and coastal water quality monitoring aligned with the Labuan Blue-Green Corridor action plan, promoting clean, resilient aquatic ecosystems.
SDG 8
Driving local livelihoods through eco-tourism product development, community-based entrepreneurship initiatives, capacity-building programs for local guides, and homestay enterprises, contributing to inclusive, sustainable economic growth.
SDG 11
Promoting community-focused urban greening projects (Green Continuum), developing public recreational parks, and supporting eco-cultural preservation programs in heritage villages such as Kampung Bebuloh Laut, ensuring vibrant, sustainable communities.
SDG 14
Safeguarding marine biodiversity through marine ecosystem protection programs at Pulau Kuraman and Pulau Rusukan Besar, coral reef conservation initiatives, and the implementation of Green Shipping Policies to address marine pollution and preserve the island’s coastal heritage.
By aligning its priorities with these SDGs, Labuan Geopark strengthens its position as a sustainable, resilient geopark model in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Regular evaluation, stakeholder engagement, and community partnerships ensure long-term success.
